My new book Jumping Over The Network Threshold has been published!

As a universal phenomenon, information diffusion plays an important role in human life. The social media platform and its interaction with the public have had a profound impact on information diffusion, and brought many new problems and puzzles that need to be solved. This report focuses on the book titled Jumping over the network threshold: Information diffusion on social media (Wang, 2022). It touches an important puzzle in the field of information diffusion research: Contrary to the prediction of analytical models, empirical studies continue to find that large-scale diffusion is actually rare and fragile. The author show that the high network threshold, the limited diffusion depth, and the strong explosion phenomenon are the primary bottlenecks restricting information diffusion. Drawing on the threshold model proposed by Grannovetter (1978), this book systematically studies the information diffusion on social media. Then, it gradually moves towards attention flow and computational narrative research. Finally, the logic of computational social science is discussed using the concept of “the center of calculation” proposed by Bruno Latour.

30 Talks of Computational Social Science

At first, I plan to finish it within this summer. It turns out to be a mission impossible for me within a short term.

I found that for the video recording of a 20 minute lecture, I need to prepare a verbatim manuscript of 20*200=4000 words, and 30 lectures is almost 120000 words. Although I try to persuade myself that this can be regarded as the process of preparing the manuscript. However, (1) the reality is that I can’t complete this work in a short time. (2) In addition, the revising of slides also takes a lot of time. For example, the first lesson actually took me more than 10 hours. (3) Plus my personal procrastination and recent physical condition (gastritis has become serious), this overdue risk will be further increased. Based on the above practical problems, I have to delay this plan. This failed attempt was mainly due to my personal (prior) overconfidence and (subsequent) panic. In this regard, I will continue to optimize these teaching materials by taking a long-term approach. The initial plan is to write a textbook, and then record the supporting video courses.

Abstract

For computational social scientists, cascade size prediction and fake news detection are two primary problems in news diffusion or computational mass communication research. Previous studies predict news diffusion via peeking the social process (temporal structure) data in the initial stage, which is summarized as Peeking strategy. However, the combination of peeking strategies and machine learning algorithms has not been fully investigated. To predict cascade size and detect false news, we adopt Peeking strategy based on well-known machine learning algorithms. Our results show that Peeking strategy can effectively improve the accuracy of cascade size prediction. Meanwhile, we can peek into a smaller time window to achieve a high performance in predicting the cascade size compared with previous methods. Nevertheless, we find that Peeking strategy with network structures fails in significantly improving the performance of false news detection. Finally, we argue that cascade structure properties can aid in prediction of cascade size, but not for the false news detection.

The Wowchemy website builder for Hugo, along with its starter templates, is designed for professional creators, educators, and teams/organizations - although it can be used to create any kind of site

The template can be modified and customised to suit your needs. It’s a good platform for anyone looking to take control of their data and online identity whilst having the convenience to start off with a no-code solution (write in Markdown and customize with YAML parameters) and having flexibility to later add even deeper personalization with HTML and CSS

You can work with all your favourite tools and apps with hundreds of plugins and integrations to speed up your workflows, interact with your readers, and much more
